Professional Careers in a Global, High Demand Industry

A Petroleum Industry-Driven Program

Experts project that by the year 2020, the United States will be the world’s largest oil producer. Not only is the U.S. petroleum industry strong, but Texas is expected to have a boom larger than North Dakota’s. The Cline Shale in West Texas—an area twice the size of the North Dakota Bakken Shale—is the largest discovery in the Permian Basin in the last 50 years. The industry experts call it a “spectacular world class horizontal oil shale target.” (Randy Foutch, CEO, Laredo Petroleum)

The petroleum industry is stronger than it has ever been, and it needs dedicated, professional, career-driven men and women. Those who are dedicated to the petroleum industry and willing to work hard have a great opportunity to develop an exciting career in this growing industry.

That’s what the Petroleum Technology Program at NCTC is about. It was developed in direct partnership with the oil and gas industry; therefore, it provides training that meets the industry’s expectations. In addition to developing technical knowledge of gas operations, students develop their communication and team-building skills through this program.

The NCTC Petroleum Technology Program offers industry-prescribed courses leading to either a two-year Associate Degree or a one-year Certificate of Completion. The coursework is a combination of core academic courses and highly specialized technical classes. The academic support courses for this program can be completed at any of our campuses—Gainesville, Corinth, Flower Mound, Bowie, or Graham. However, the technical courses are taught at our Bowie and Graham campuses.

Industry partners provided financial support to expand facilities at the Bowie and Graham campuses, adding a vocational training area as well as a large, multi-purpose classroom designed expressly for the Petroleum Technology technical courses. This allows space for the many components of the program, including safety training as designed and mandated by OSHA and PEC. Other courses address work teams, communication and leadership, and industry specific hands on labs for the petroleum industries.

These courses prepare students for entry-level careers as part of a production team charged with safe and efficient extraction and flow of product. Those currently in the field who combine education with experience will be able to seek progression into managerial jobs with higher wages.

At its foundation, the program introduces students to the industry and to the purposes and procedures in varied petroleum technologies: exploration, drilling, production, transportation, marketing, and refining. The curriculum content includes both introductory and advanced oil and gas specialty topics as recommended by industry partners.

The program provides students with the knowledge and skills to locate careers in the high demand global Petroleum Industry. Students gain knowledge related to basic oil field equipment maintenance and repair, and environmental and regulatory mandates. Students also learn to integrate computer literacy with new technology field needs to expediently translate well data.

Petroleum industry partners demonstrate their support for the program by providing financial help with facilities, equipment and scholarships. Several also provide paid internships for selected students in the summer.
